Crystal received her early ballet training at Jean M Wong Ballet School in Hong Kong, where she completed her RAD examinations and received scholarships in their International Summer Dance Schools. She then pursued full time training at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). Crystal has obtained her BA (Hons) in the Art and Teaching of Ballet at the College of the Royal Academy of Dance London Headquarters, graduating under the University of Durham. After graduating in 1999, she moved to Melbourne, Australia where she further pursued her study of a Graduate Diploma in Choreography at the Victorian College of the Arts and obtained her post-graduate diploma from the University of Melbourne. Trained and working under Craig Phillips, she became a certified Pilates Instructor at Dance Medicine Australia (DMA) since 2000 and has worked closely with dancers in Australia.
Currently based in Sydney, her Ballet teaching journey since 2000 has brought her to work alongside influential figures like Gelsey Kirkland, Ashley Killar, Jane Allyn and Hilary Kaplan. As a freelance teacher, she regularly shares her knowledge to studios including Ecole Ballet and Dance Theatre, Alegria Dance Studios, The NSW International Ballet Academy (formerly known as The Conlan College), Danceworks and the McDonald College in Sydney. She also tutors at RAD intensive holiday courses interstate to help prepare students for RAD exams in Australia.
Crystal has guest taught for various schools in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and around Australia. She has toured to Perth, Melbourne, and Auckland, New Zealand with International Ballet Workshops (IBW) and RAD International Summer School in Malaysia, guest teaching alongside world-renowned teaching faculty in the industry. Her involvement in dance adjudication includes Canberra Dance Festival and Scholarship Audition Classes at Betsy Sawers Grades & Vocational Awards hosted by RAD ACT Panel.
She has also completed the prestigious RAD examiner’s training program under the guidance of former Artistic Director of RAD Paula Hunt and has joined the RAD examiner’s panel. She travels regularly for RAD examination tours around the world.
In recent years, she has also taken on the role as a Practical Teaching Supervisor for CBTS teacher training course for the RAD, passing on her knowledge to the younger generation of ballet teachers. She will continue to do so in their new CDT teacher training course as a tutor.
Her recent appointment as an RAD CPD tutor will allow her to share her knowledge with practicing RAD teaching members.
